George Francis Killoran was born April 29, 1935 to Reginald and Phyllis (McGovern) Killoran. On February 20, 2024 he passed away at the Chaleur Regional Hospital at the age of 88 following heart failure.
He is survived by his sister Phyllis Deslippe (Hank, deceased) of Detroit and his brother Joe (Judy) of Saskatoon, also his five children, Patty Flanagan (Andy), Debby Killoran (Grant Murchie), Tommy Killoran (Louise Stever) Danny Killoran (Maureen McDonnell) and Barry Killoran (Kim Doyle), as well as 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
George is predeceased by his parents, his ex-wife Cathy, 7 brothers Charlie, Gerald, Bernard, Robert, Matt, Terry, Kevin and 3 sisters, Kay, Eleanor and Roberta.
He served 7 years in the Canadian navy before becoming a welder at the Belledune smelter where he worked until retirement.
George was known as a storyteller. He wrote in the smelter union paper under the pseudo name, THE WANDERING PEN. He followed and understood politics. He was a strong supporter of social programs and his NDP party.
In his younger years, George was instrumental in the development of many local sports and facilities. He helped start Belledune minor hockey and baseball. He worked tirelessly to create sporting infrastructures like the Belledune arena and ball fields.
He enjoyed spending time playing games and telling stories to his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards (auction 45) with family and friends. He was proud of his Irish roots.
His family sends their appreciation for George’s care to the Valley Lourdes Nursing home and the staff at the Chaleur Regional Hospital.
A visitation will be held at the St John Evangelist Church, Belledune on March 14, 2024 from 6pm to 8pm. A funeral mass will be held the following day on March 15, 2024 at 2pm at St John Evangelist Church, Belledune. Funeral arrangements are in the care of MacMillan & Drapeau Funeral Home, Black Point.
