Eric Cook Obituary

Eric Raymond Cook – Black Point

It is with profound sadness that the family of Eric Cook announce that his death occurred at home
unexpectedly on January 4, 2020 following a very brief illness. Born on November 22, 1987 in
Dalhousie, NB, Eric was the son of Jean (MacMillan) Cook and the late Finley Cook of Black Point,
NB.

Eric, affectionately known as “Cookie”, was valedictorian and Male Athlete of the Year of the 2005
graduating class of Dalhousie Regional High School. He went on to study at St. Mary’s University in
Halifax and then the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton from where he received his degree in
Mechanical Engineering in 2010.

Eric was a natural athlete and excelled at many sports through his school years and beyond, especially
hockey and soccer. He began playing hockey with Belledune Minor Hockey and went on to play in
Charlo, Dalhousie and then with the Restigouche AAA Red Wings. As a youth he played with the
Acadie-Chaleur Titans, the New Brunswick Stars and the Atlantic Selects. He played high school
hockey and served as captain of the DRHS Condors. He also played for Dalhousie Rangers and
various rec hockey teams and, more recently, served as assistant coach for the Dalhousie AQV
Cyclones where he found himself coaching his high school rivals.

Eric loved hockey and it played an important role in his life. His skill and speed on the ice made up for
his small size and he often preferred to make a play rather than score a goal. His hockey skills were
honed on the outdoor rinks that his father, Finley created for him and his sister, Mandi. His Mom, Jean
was his chauffeur, roadie and biggest fan supporting him through all the years of his hockey “career”
and in all things in his life.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing mackerel on the Bay of Chaleur from his grandfather’s fishing flat.
The family farm in Black Point held a special place in his heart as did the beach and his time at the
shore. He had a special bond and relationship with his dog, Macki.

Eric’s outgoing personality and charm, reflected in his smile and dimples, endeared him to those he met
and with whom he worked. True to form as a Cook, he could talk to anyone. He loved to tease and
play pranks. Having a ‘big heart’, his circle of friends were far and wide and he always kept in touch
with them. He had a special place in his heart for his nephew, Nathaniel and most recently, for his
nephew, Johnny whom he called his “pride and joy”.

In recent years Eric had connected deeply with his “higher power” and found great strength in his
spiritual journey. His relationships through AA were significant and he was both supported by and a
means of support to many. His leadership abilities on the ice, at work and with AA were
acknowledged as a gift. At the time of his death, Eric was employed with Design Built Mechanical of
Charlo, NB.

He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Jean; his siblings, Mandi (Kris), Pam and Jim (Mary);
nephews Johnny Brown and Nathaniel Webber-Cook; aunts, Marilyn MacMillan (Don), Betsy (John)
Dickie and Phyllis (Bernard) Furlong, Ellen Cook (a.k.a. ‘Helen’) and Alice Webb; uncles, Gerald
(Gabriella) MacMillan and Douglas (Chris) Cook; and many cousins including a special friendship
with cousin, Kendra.

He was predeceased by his father, Finley; grandparents Raymond and Vivian MacMillan and Billy and
Isabel Cook; aunts, Lillian and Ruthie; uncles, Mac, Bruce, George and Kingston.

Visitation will be held from the Archibald Room at the Dalhousie Recreaplex (122 Inch Arran Ave.) on

1:00 p.m. from St. John Bosco Catholic Church (470 Victoria Street, Dalhousie) with United Church

donations to Restigouche SPCA (165 Baybreeze Drive, Dalhousie, NB, E8C 1E4; 684-4396) or to any
Minor Hockey Program to help give children an opportunity to play hockey. Arrangements are in the

Rest easy, Eric and may peace eternal be yours.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
