Mabel Babin Obituary

Obituary Mabel Babin 1934-2019

Mabel Babin passed away at Villa Renaissance, Dalhousie, on October 29 at the age of 85 after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Valmont Babin (2018), and mother of Anne, Peter (Suzanne), late Michael (2015)(Belinda), Krista (Bruce), and Steven. Born in Fleurant Point, QC, the daughter of the late George Wafer and Helen (Calvert) Wafer, she grew up on the family farm. That left its mark as she retained a lifelong love of animals and always had at least one cat.

She and Dad met when she accompanied her parents on shopping trips to Loggie’s, where Dad worked for a while after finishing school.

An only child, Mabel was delighted to marry into a large family and always had a full house. She welcomed all and made them feel at home. Many of our friends would visit even after we had moved out. She was always ready to listen and especially liked when the visitors brought their kids too.

A homemaker after she married, Mabel volunteered as she could, including years as badge commissioner for the Girl Guides and canvasser for the Cancer Society. Many people will remember her and Dad from dancing lessons, and from bowling which she had to give up in 2011 due to a grave illness. She was a prolific knitter and enjoyed quilting.

In addition to her children she leaves six grandchildren: Jillian, Jessie (Monique), Scott (Victoria), Isabelle (Cassidy), William, and Jennifer, all of whom developed a special sweet tooth for the Nanny cookies she made sure to bake for them.

Our thanks to the staff of the Obstetrics unit, Campbellton Regional Hospital, where she was a patient from August 2018 to July 2019. Our thanks and gratitude to the staff of Villa Renaissance for their compassion and care since July – she was in good hands – and to Sr. Jeannine, Sr. Therese, Rejeanne, and Alice. To Dr. MacMillan for years of conscientious, kind, and thorough care, and to Dr. Bujold for his assistance on her last day.

For those inclined, donations to the Haven of Hope or Restigouche SPCA would be appreciated.

The funeral is Monday, November 4, 2019 at 4pm, Eglise St. Jean-Baptiste in Dalhousie, followed by a reception there.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of MacMillan's Funeral Home, Black Point.
