Chester Devereaux Obituary

With sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the death of Chester Joseph Devereaux of Belledune NB, on April 28, 2024, at the Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst NB. He was 86 years old.

Chester will be deeply missed by his beloved wife and “sweetheart” of 58 happy years, Betty (Furlotte) and his three daughters, Dawn (Steve) Mockler of Fredericton NB, Karen (Mark) of Caledon ON and Amy (James) McCarthy of Fredericton NB. He was also the cherished “Papa” of eight grandchildren; Rachel, Patrick, Daniel, Kelsey, Matthew, Jimmy, Charlie and Katie.

He was born in Belledune NB on February 5th, 1938, and was pre-deceased by his mother Helen(Culligan), his father Urban, and his brothers Charles, Roddy (Jeannette), Billy (Geraldine) and Frankie.

He is survived by his sisters Elizabeth (Jim) Cooke, Ursula (Ian) McCallum, Corinne (Steven) Mikulak and brother Bobby (Linda).

Chester graduated from NBCC Moncton Trade School as a pipefitter and was a respected member of United Associated of Plumbers and Pipe fitters Local 325. Chester’s passions outside of his career were diverse and many. An active sportsman, he loved playing baseball and hockey, which he played regularly at the Belledune arena right up until his 80th year. He also loved all things outdoors: hunting, fishing, cutting wood, gardening, birdwatching and anything that got him out in the fresh air. There is no one who could pick wild strawberries, fiddleheads or grow potatoes quite like him. And he was always more than happy to share the fruits of his labour with family and friends. He’ll also be missed by Bernard and Lawrence with whom he enjoyed his daily walks, no matter the weather, up until only weeks ago.

Most importantly, Chester will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and devoted husband. His hugs, puns, singing and dancing in the kitchen with Mom are memories that will stay with us forever. His friends and neighbours will all miss his friendly chats and cheerful waves whenever they happened to pass by. He will be truly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. Chester passed peacefully surrounded by love after a brief hospital stay.

The burial will take place at a later date.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any nature or ecological organization, or to any charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are in the care of MacMillan & Drapeau Funeral Home, Black Point.
