Hillegonda Alida (van Schie) de Groot
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Hillegonda who passed away peacefully at the Villa Renaissance, Dalhousie on August 9th surrounded by family after a long battle with dementia. She was born on August 13, 1928 in Warmond, Holland. Hillegonda, Hilda as she was known was the wife of the late Marinus Wilhelmus de Groot and the daughter of the late Nicolaas and Geertruida Petronella (v. de Poel) van Schie. She was the 6th of 15 children.
Hilda and Marinus immigrated from Holland to California in 1952 and then to New Brunswick in 1956 and became Canadian citizens in 1967. She was a homemaker and worked tirelessly in the success of Hillmar Farms. She loved to sing, you would often hear her singing while she was doing housework. She could write poems and recite them as well. During her retirement years Mom and Dad took up cross country skiing and square dancing. She was a member of the Les Aventuriers Ski Club and the Golden Age Club. She attended the Saint John Bosco Church. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met.
She will be missed by her children, Trudy Dryden (Bob), Peter de Groot (Lynn), Nick de Groot (Carol), Bill de Groot (Paula), Junior de Groot (Denise), John de Groot (Nicole); 20 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren who she thought the world of; sisters Els van Schie, Truus van Schie, Nel van Schie, Jane Duivenvoorden, Fien van Schie and sisters-in-law Leni van Schie, Ria van Schie and Ali van Schie.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her son Ron and daughter-in-law Carole, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.
According to her wishes a funeral service will be held at the Saint John Bosco Church, Dalhousie on August 16th at 11 am. Funeral arrangements are in the care of MacMillan's Funeral Home, Black Point.
The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Villa Renaissance for the great care that was given to Mom, especially during her last days.
In lieux of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
