John Patrick Flanagan Obituary

John Patrick Flanagan

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Patrick "Paddy" Flanagan, who passed away peacefully Friday evening, June 27, at the age of 72. Born on March 31, 1953, in Bathurst, NB, and raised in Belledune. Paddy was predeceased by his parents, James Andrew Flanagan and Mary Clara Elizabeth (Shannon), and his older sister, Joanie.

With his former wife, Elizabeth (Sullivan),

Paddy is survived by his four children and

seven beloved grandchildren, each of

whom held a special place in his heart. His

lineage includes Roger (Cindy) daughter

Margaret; Martina (Jeremy) daughters

Ally, Sharon, and Emma; George

(Evelyn) sons Seamus and Jason;

and Clara Jane (Luc), daughter

Skylar.

 He is survived by his siblings: Andy (Patty), Emmie, Kathy Hickey (Laurie), Rita Kuhn (Kevin), Jimmy (Bonnie), and Stephen (Michelle), along with many nieces and nephews, and even some great ones too.

Patrick Flanagan, known affectionately as Paddy (but don’t you ever dare to call him Patty). He left this world while indulging in his favorite pastime: taking a nap. He had a lifelong love affair with bacon and eggs, which fueled his mornings, and he always insisted on having the news or the Weather Channel on in the background. A devoted Toronto Maple Leafs fan, he requested six leafs players as his pallbearers, so that they could let him down one last time.

Paddy was the former owner of the once-thriving Shamrock Taxi, where he proudly celebrated his Irish heritage as a true Canadian Irishman. This free-spirited Tolkien enthusiast had a passion for writing as well; he was a journalist for several publications, including The Northern Lights. He was also the author of a one-hit-wonder book titled "Ma's Cow", a title that brought a chuckle to many and introduced readers to his unique sense of humor. Though the book didn’t exactly make the bestseller list, it nonetheless captured his playful spirit and deep connection with family.

In memory of Patrick Flanagan, let's crank up some Stompin' Tom tunes and gather together with stories, laughter, and a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs—for that’s how he would have wanted it.

There will be a closed casket viewing on Tuesday, July 8 from 6pm to 8pm at St. John the Evangelist Church at 2601 Main St, Belledune, NB. His funeral service will take place Wednesday, July 9 at 11am at the same location.
