Malcolm (Mackey) Hickey Obituary

July 23rd, 1938 – February 3rd, 2026

Malcolm (Mackey) James Hickey ,87, passed away peacefully at the Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst on February 3rd, 2026.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad. He was the father, friend, and neighbor that everyone wanted. If you knew dad, you were better for it, and he always felt that he was better off knowing you.

Malcolm is survived by sons Bill (Kim) of Lakeville Corner, Donald (Kim) of Jacquet River, Bruce (Natalie) of Oromocto; granddaughters Kristie, Megan (John) ,Ella, and Mya ; grandson Kirk (Stephanie); great granddaughter Sadie.

He was predeceased by his wife Adeline; parents Holten and Julia; brothers Clarence, Morven, Earl, Eldon, and Augusta; sisters Myrtle, Barbara, Audrey, Charlotte and Dorcas.

Dad was born, raised, and lived his entire life in Jacquet River, a true JR boy. For many years he proudly served his community as a volunteer firefighter and Fire Chief. Volunteering and helping others was not something he talked about, it was simply something he did.

He was a builder, a collector, and a dreamer.

The builder helped Donald build his house, helped Billy build a shed at his first home in Oromocto, and competed with Bruce for the title of ‘the Hickey with the most sheds’ (dad won...for now).

The collector loved a good find and a great deal. This was a passion he shared with mom. From Dinky cars to decorative plates and EVERYTHING in between. They had a lot of sheds to fill.

The dreamer was still dreaming up until the end. Always with his finger on the pulse of the Jacquet River real estate market. He loved to come up with a plan and a good invention.

Dad, we will miss you and hope we do you proud.

We would like to say a special thank you to Amy’s Quality Care and to Marsha for making it possible for dad to stay in his home as long as he could. Also, thank you to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at the Chaleur Regional Hospital where dad spent his final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the donor’s charity of choice or the ALS Society of Canada.

A service and celebration will be held at a later date.
