Monique Hickey Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Monique Hickey née Valcourt, born February 15, 1930, in Amqui, PQ . Our mother passed peacefully Friday, June 27th, 2025 in her 95th year from complications of pneumonia.

Monique was an avid gardener and waited patiently every spring to plant her marigolds along the front walkways.  She and her husband Owen also tended large vegetable gardens to be shared amongst the family and community. The yard and house were decorated beautifully for every season and occasion. Monique was a great Scrabble player, with a one-word score of 136, much to the chagrin of her daughters who challenged her often to a game. A true matriarch, gifted in language, she could speak both English and French seamlessly.

She was a gracious host. Always welcoming anyone in need and curating many good times, with many summers spent at the cabin creating a lifetime of memories with her grandchildren, children and friends. The kettle was always on for a cup of tea or a lunch, and everyone was welcome.

Mom loved to look her best. She loved jewellery and clothing. She had an ardent interest in antiques which she bought and sold for many years. She loved local history and enjoyed finding little treasures in the stories of the past.

Mom was politically active and stood for everyone's right to exist harm free. She fostered many children and her love for them was evident in her actions and how many lives she bettered without ever needing recognition. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary,  she proudly played a key role in establishing the medical centre, she was instrumental in obtaining low-cost housing projects in Jacquet River and surrounding areas,  and she worked diligently to help implement the local food bank.

Our mother enjoyed crafting, knitting, cross-stitch, sewing, and making Christmas ornaments for the tree. She also had a talent for painting, poetry, and telling a good joke.

She is survived by her sisters Victaline (Baby) Wettlaufer and Veronique Rioux, her children Glenda Godin (Clovis), Rae Hickey (Angela), Dawn Sheppard (Gordon), June Hickey (Randall Ambrose), and Moni Lana Hickey as well as her beloved grandchildren Tara, Mary Beth, Layna, Jillian, Darla, Craig, Natasha, Helen, Scott, Angelica, Ryan and Cindy,  also her 23 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, plus countless others whose lives she has touched through the years.

She was predeceased by her husband Owen Hickey, her son Barry Hickey, as well as her parents Euclid Valcourt and Helen Pitre.

We would kindly request that you raise a glass to celebrate her long and complete life.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Donation can be made in lieu of flowers to the JRJHS school breakfast program or the Ladies Auxilliary.
