Shirley LaPointe (1940-2023)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley LaPointe of Nash Creek, New Brunswick at the age of 83.
Shirley passed away peacefully in her home on June 7, 2023. She died with her family at her bedside. She was the daughter of the late George and Margaret Harvey.
Shirley was predeceased by her beloved siblings Marjorie, Jack, Donnie and Wayne.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years Paul Edgar LaPointe; children Beth (Nic), Trevor (Margaret), Hugh John (Wilma), and Paul (Shannon); grandchildren Brandon, Danyon, Zachary, Chase, Chloe, Nathaniel, Johanna, Abigail, Michael, Elise, and Evelyn; siblings Helen Killoran and Lloyd Harvey; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and spouses of family members.
Shirley was a pioneer in her family as the first of her siblings to attend a post-secondary school, and attained her Teacher’s Diploma from Teacher’s College in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
After working as a teacher for several years, she decided to go into business with her husband. Together they ran one of Nash Creek’s longest running businesses that remains in operation today: ‘Shirley’s Variety,’ also known as ‘Paul’s,’ which is a popular hangout spot for Shirley’s close group of friends who are lovingly referred to as the Golden Girls.
Shirley cared deeply for her community and helped start a local church. For several years, services were often held in her house until a permanent church was built in Nash Creek, which would become the Full Gospel Country Church.
Shirley loved spending time with her beloved grandchildren, walks to the store, knitting, reading, trips to Zellers for breakfast, the Christmas season, and shopping – she loved a good sale!
We would like to thank Teenie Driscoll, one of Shirley’s dearest friends, for helping take care of her in her final and hardest moments. We would also like to thank Shirley’s personal care worker Nicole Godin, occupational therapist Maxime Bujold and the exceptional nursing staff at Extra-Mural for looking after her while she was ill. Their help was much appreciated by the family.
A graveside service will be held at Old Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Nash Creek on Monday, June 19th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Funeral arrangements are in the care of MacMillan's Funeral Home, Black Point.
